Hair

Restoration

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) for hair loss or thinning hair is the latest trend in hair growth and hair loss treatments. PRP for hair loss is a non-surgical procedure that utilizes the stem cells and growth factors from the patient’s own blood to trigger the growth of hair from a resting or miniaturized hair follicle. The first step involves drawing the patient’s blood into a specialized tube and is spun down in a centrifuge. The centrifuge will separate the platelets from the rest of the blood. The final product is plasma that has been separated from the white and red blood cells. This plasm is then set aside and gravity allows the platelets to drop out of suspension and collect at the bottom of the tube. This denser area of platelets in the plasma is called Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP). This typically has a 3-5x concentration of platelets and is the key ingredient to success in this hair restoration procedure.

The PRP is injected back into the scalp using subdermal and dermal injections. This therapy is mostly used as a growth stimulant and typically requires four (4) treatment sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart initially. It takes approximately 4-9 months to see results.

Why PRP has shown results for hair loss treatments?
PRP has approximately 5x the number of platelets found in ordinary blood. These platelets have:

  1. Platelet derived growth factors

  2. Transforming growth factor

  3. Insulin like growth factor 1

  4. Vascular endothelial growth factor

  5. Keratinocyte growth factor

All of the above have a positive impact on the growth of hair. Platelets stimulate the healing of wounds and cellular repair.  When placed inside the scalp, it seems to be able to repair areas of hair loss.

RESULTS
The initial series is 4 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. PRP is not a permanent fix for hair loss. Maintenance of 1-2 treatments a year is usually required to maintain results. Additionally, androgenic alopecia is caused by the hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone) and PRP does not do anything to mitigate the effects of this hormone. Use of hair growth supplements such as Nutrafol and topical products such as Rogaine may increase the effects of PRP treatments.

PRP injections for hair restoration have shown a positive therapeutic effect on both males and females without major side effects.

SAFETY of PRP

PRP for hair loss is considered very safe because PRP therapy is immunologically neutral and has no danger of allergies, hypersensitivity or foreign body reactions. PRP has a very short period of inflammation at the sites of wounds thus reducing any possible complications.

On its own, PRP is also used in hair restoration that produces great results. Using a thin needle, a patient’s own PRP is injected into the scalp. The growth factors within the blood cells then go to work and trigger hair growth. It is suitable for men and women. The end result is fuller, healthier hair.
At times, PRP injections for hair growth can be uncomfortable and painful. There is no downtime following the procedure and you can go back to daily activities immediately after.
